Damien Ray Hayes | Madison County Jail

REXBURG — He wanted to report that his television was broken but ended up with a trip to jail.

Damien Ray Hayes, 23, called police Sunday around 1 p.m. saying his TV was working fine on Saturday, but when he tried to turn it on Sunday, it looked like someone had punched the screen, according to police.

Police visited Hayes’ home on Reed Street and the television had indeed been broken, according to Rexburg Police Chief Shane Turman. But they also discovered Hayes was wanted on a Bonneville County felony bench warrant for violating probation.

In June, Hayes was placed on 10 years of felony probation after he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of felony injury to a child. He was originally charged with rape of a minor after he had sex with a 15-year-old girl. At his sentencing, Hayes was accused of impregnating the teen and was required to obtain a paternity test after the child was born. Documents do not specify if Hayes is the father of the child.

As part of probation, Hayes was required to remain in the Habilitation, Advocacy & Supports supported living center to assist with his developmental disabilities. The television is owned by the agency, according to Turman, and it’s unclear who caused the damaged.

Jail staff said as of Monday afternoon, Hayes was released from the Madison County Jail into the custody of the Bonneville County Sheriffs Office.
